Summer in South Texas can heat up fast—and kids feel it even faster than we do. At Bexar Bulverde Fire Department, we want to help you stay ahead of it so your family can enjoy a safe, active summer.
A little awareness goes a long way when it comes to heat. Most heat-related emergencies can be prevented with a few simple habits.
Simple Ways to Keep Kids Safe in the Heat:
- Hydrate early, not just often
Kids don’t always realize they’re thirsty until they’re already overheated. Starting the day with water helps prevent that.
- Time it right
The middle of the day brings the highest heat and sun exposure. Mornings and evenings are safer for outdoor play.
- Build in shade breaks
Even short breaks inside or in the shade give the body time to cool down.
- Dress for the weather
Lightweight, light-colored clothing helps keep kids cooler.
- Never leave a child alone in a car—ever
Not for a minute. Not even with the windows cracked. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise 20+ degrees in just 10 minutes. Children’s bodies heat up faster than adults’, putting them at serious risk for heatstroke.
- Create a reminder system
If your routine changes, it’s easy to forget. Placing your phone or bag in the back seat can help you double-check before locking up.
Prevention is the key. A few small habits can make a big difference in keeping kids safe.
